Description:
This course is an introduction to Spanish that will enable students to describe people, places, school, family, the house, activities, and places to go. Class exercises and activities will strengthen skills in speaking and listening to Spanish and in using the expressions to read and write short passages. Spanish will be used as much as possible during class to provide an opportunity for students to hear the language and students are expected to communicate in the language during class. Language study will be linked to the culture and geography of the Spanish-speaking world as it relates to those themes. Classes meet every other day during the IA period.
Students will be able to:
Recite the Spanish alphabet (name the letters)
Recognize, identify, and memorize the sounds of Spanish alphabet and spell words aloud
Memorize and apply the rules of natural accentuation
Count in Spanish: 0-1,000,000
Identify and describe: days of the week, months, seasons of the year, and weather conditions
Tell time in Spanish
Express the time of day (morning, afternoon, evening) and date
Use introductions, farewells, and expressions of courtesy correctly
Express biographical data (name, birthday, address, nationality, personal characteristics)
Identify the Spanish singular/plural subject pronouns and apply the correct subject pronoun for “you” (tú vs. usted) based on context
Understand and apply correct subject verb agreement for ser and tener
Obtain geographical information
Identify and locate Spanish-speaking countries on maps
Classroom policies, rules, and expectations:
Bring materials and assignments to class:
3-ring binder-style notebook (Additional paper may be added as needed and divided into sections: Vocabulary, Class notes, Homework, Grammar, and Verbs), agenda book to record assignments, completed work, writing instrument, teacher generated supplemental materials (study sheets, etc.)
Active participation in every class with a sincere effort to speak Spanish, good
behavior, and respect for others.

Homework:
Approximately 20-25 minutes of homework reinforces the content of each class and when it is subsequently reviewed, errors should be corrected. Parents are encouraged to
review completed homework and can refer to the class webpage to see assignments.
Notebook:
Keep an organized notebook / binder to use as a study aid. In it keep a record of vocabulary words and expressions, questions and responses, grammar notes, important study sheets, papers, and examples of corrected work.
Evaluation:
Grades are based on completion of daily assignments, oral participation, cooperation in class, tests, quizzes, projects, and notebooks.
Quizzes: 40%
Tests and projects: 60%
Homework and class participation are expected in each class. Collected homework assignments are graded as check plus (exceeds expectations), check (meets expectations), check minus (incomplete, careless, errors, or cannot read), and zero (not done). At the end of every semester, the collected/recorded homework assignments will be averaged and used as a graded formative assessment.
Class preparation and participation: (bringing all materials to class, studying, contributing to lesson, effort to use Spanish)
Major Projects: Thematic visual projects for presentation in class.
Parent/Teacher Communication:
Information on homework, quiz/test dates, assignments, class news, teacher email, useful
links, and more is posted on website. In the event of absence refer to posted assignments.
Progress Reports will be issued at the end of the 1st and 3rd marking periods.
Grades will be on the 2nd and final report cards.
Extra help: Available after school and by appointment.
Additional Parental Information, Support and Guidance:
Among the MCAS test-taking skills students will strengthen are strategies for uncovering meanings of unfamiliar words by comparing and contrasting cognates in English and Spanish and answering open-ended questions to develop writing skills.
Students should have adequate supplies to last throughout the school year. There are very few supplies on hand. Materials recommended for all students are a 1” 3 ring binder, filler paper (150 sheets), 5 dividers, pencils, blue and red pens, markers, dry erase markers, index cards, 2-double pocket folders, pencil sharpener with cover, and a book cover/sock.
A Spanish-English dictionary is recommended but not required. Copies of dictionaries are available in the classroom. On-line translation sites that do the work for students are not recommended to complete assignments, however useful links for practice and extra help are often posted on the class site.
