Extra help:  
By appointment, mornings or afternoons.  Homework Club is also available school wide on select days.

Classroom policies and expectations:
Bring all necessary materials to class including your: binder, agenda, index cards, homework, and writing supplies (pencils, blue and red pens, markers/crayons, dry erase markers).

Keep an organized 3-ring binder-style notebook as an important study aid.  Keep paper, class notes, study sheets, and other      
important papers in it. Use it to record new vocabulary words, expressions, questions & responses, and grammar
notes.  (Suggestions for dividers are Vocabulary, Class Notes, Homework,
Grammar, & Verbs.)  Add additional paper when necessary.
You are expected to attempt all assignments and homework.
Good listening skills and cooperation with classmates is required for practicing the language.
Ask for help when needed.
Communicate in Spanish during class.

Parent/Teacher Communication:
Assignments, links to current topics of study, and class news can be found on the class website.   In the event of absence refer to posted assignments.  Progress Reports will be issued at the end of the 1st and 3rd marking periods.  Grades will be on the 2nd and final report cards.

Course Syllabus:
This course is a continuation of the grade 5 Spanish course.  This year new vocabulary and grammar topics will include ways to describe family members and school and home activities. Class exercises and activities will strengthen skills in speaking and listening to Spanish and in using the expressions to read and write short passages.  Spanish is used as much as possible during class to provide an opportunity for students to hear and speak the language. Language study will be linked to the culture and geography of the Spanish-speaking world relating to the vocabulary themes.
Classes meet every other day.

Homework Policy:
Approximately 20-25 minutes of homework reinforces the content of each class.  Homework is not graded with a letter or percentage grade.  A reasonable attempt at success is considered acceptable and is awarded homework points.  Most homework is worth one point unless stated otherwise when assigned. Some assignments include practicing the language aloud and are not written. When it is reviewed, errors should be corrected.  Parents should review completed homework and the class webpage to see assignments when necessary.

Evaluation:
Grades are based on oral participation, cooperation in class, completion of daily assignments, notebooks, quizzes, tests, and projects.
        Class participation: 10%  Bringing all materials to class, studying, contributing to lesson, making an effort to use Spanish
        Homework: 10%  Making a sincere effort to complete assigned work before class and correct/edit it when reviewed in class
        Notebook: 10%  Keeping class notes and important papers well organized in a notebook/binder to use as a study aid
        Quizzes: 30%
        Tests and projects: 40%

Major Projects:  Thematic visual projects for presentation in class.
Additional Parental Information, Support and Guidance:
        Among the MCAS test-taking skills students will strengthen are strategies for uncovering meanings of unfamiliar words by comparing and contrasting cognates in English and Spanish and answering open-ended questions to develop writing skills.
        
        Spanish-English dictionaries are available in the classroom.  On-line translation sites that do the work for students are not recommended to complete assignments,
however useful links for practice and extra help are often posted on the class site.
